d.i.y dipped baskets: thinking beyond white

A few weeks ago I spotted some round belly baskets at Home Sense, and knew they were just what I needed to hide my bathroom's ugly radiator, and to hold all of G's bath time do-dads (like towels, puppy shampoo, and the brush he wishes would just disappear) . . .

Truth be told, while they are super useful, what really drew me to them was that unexpected pop of fuchsia at the bottom. You know I'm a sucker for anything pink, and I just love how that little bit manages to take a simple basket and make it really special. The way it pops against my yellow bathmat doesn't hurt either!

Obviously dipped baskets have been huge for a while now, and the trend shows no sign of stopping. Serena & Lily sell a similar set to mine in white . . .

. . . and Horchow, West Elm, Terrain, and Target are just some of the other stores currently selling pretty white versions of their own. 

In fact, it occurred to me that almost every version I've seen has been white . . .

. . . and while I love that look (love, love, love in fact), my sweet little finds had me wondering why I haven't seen some other shades in the mix. Seems to me that this would be a great way to quickly, easily and cheaply(!) add a bit of colour to your life! We've all got old baskets lying around (I know I do), so all you have to do is pick a pantone and you're in business!

It seems everyone has different ideas on how best to achieve this look when it comes it comes to d.i.y'n. Martha Stewart took the "dipped" name seriously with her detailed tutorial . . .

. . . Geneva of A pair & a spare relied on trusty old spray paint for hers . . . 

. . . and Chatelaine figured the pouring method was the best way to get 'er done (and probably save some paint) . . .

I'll leave it up to you to pick your poison. As for me, I'm thinking the baskets in my kitchen have a date with a bucket and a can of chartreuse paint. When in doubt, I tend to trust Martha. Amiright or amiright?
